The Court Reporters Board — From Licensing to Enforcement 
The seminar will cover the history of the Court Reporters Board and its purpose, the makeup of the board and the role of board members, the licensee complaint process, and the disciplinary process. Come get to know California’s CRB! This presentation strives to be interactive and will allow time for questions from attendees.

Broadcast Captioning — Why It’s More Than Just The Captions on Your TV! 
Attendees will learn the basics of Broadcast Captioning such as formatting, connections, and software. You’ll learn how to script, which equipment you will need to do Broadcast Captioning, and how to move captions on the screen. Attendees will also get to step into the shoes of a deaf individual for a moment and experience what it is like to be deaf/HOH. We will end the session with some funny caption bloopers and show you how to avoid making the same errors!

From Student to Certified 
Newly licensed? Transitioning from one area of reporting to another? Let us help you fill in the gaps! This is the stuff they don’t teach you in school. This session is geared towards helping students and new reporters with the procedural aspect of being a working reporter. There is information for both court and deposition work provided through a Q/A session and PowerPoint presentation that is available for participants to download.

The California CSR License Exam 
This seminar identifies the three components of the CSR license exam. It includes how all three portions of the exam are developed, validated, and administered. Students, prospective licensees, and current licensees can benefit from learning the ins and outs of the CSR exam and just how prestigious that California CSR license is.

How to Be a Court Reporter Advocate 
During this class you will hear about the California legislative process. There will be an educational portion where you’ll learn how bills are sponsored, authored, and lobbied. You’ll learn about the different legislative committees and what types of bills they hear. The second portion will be fun. You’ll be put into small groups to create talking points and will practice talking with legislators. This will give you the confidence to be able to help advocate on behalf of your profession if called to do so.

A Court Reporter’s Survival Guide for Remote Proceedings (A Videographer’s Perspective) 
For better or for worse, remote litigation is here to stay. In this session we will focus on how to make the “worst” so much better! We will take a deep dive into everything from how to build the ultimate remote depo tool kit (it’s way easier and much cheaper than you think!), and we will also take a close look into the emerging technology and how to integrate that into your workflow for a worry-free remote depo experience. I will create a Google sheet for sharing presentation material and hyperlinks to apps and gear purchase merchants (think Amazon!).

Code of Ethics 101: CART Ethics and Industry Standards 
By the end of this session, participants will be able to discern what behavior and communication norms are appropriate in the captioning setting, how to build a trusting relationship with their consumer, use of appropriate vocabulary regarding Deafness and Deaf Community norms, and understand ADA guidelines regarding communication access within Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Electronic Transcripts for Freelancer Reporters 
The five-year window the California Courts were provided to perfect the transition from paper to electronic court reporter transcripts is soon coming to an end. Per the California Code of Civil Procedure section 271, as of January 1, 2023, freelance reporters who work in court shall deliver transcripts in electronic format that meet the California Rules of Court 8.144 requirements. The California courts are required to receive these electronic transcripts. This session will provide instructions on how to use the YesLaw software to produce and deliver electronic transcripts that meet the CRC 8.144 requirements.

This session is all about the world of Freelance Court Reporting! Meet with CCRA President Tamara Houston and CCRA’s lobbyist Ignacio Hernandez to learn about the issues facing California’s freelance court reporters. We’ll discuss the challenges of remote reporting and the laws that govern it. You’ll learn how to educate and advocate against companies using digital recording operators in place of stenographers, and we’ll explain the new firm registration laws in California. You’ll be able to engage with Tamara and Ignacio to bring forth issues facing freelance court reporters and help become part of the solution. Get ready to Talk It Out!

So You Want To Be An Independent Contractor (IC)? 
Attendees of this session will learn what it means to be an independent contractor (freelancer), including some best practices to protect yourself and work with agencies, as well as an overview of legal regulations for contracting. The ramifications of AB5 and the imposition of the ABC test will be explained, as well as their impact on contracting as a means of conducting business within the state of California. This session will be informative to both captioners and court reporters who are currently working as or are interested in becoming independent contractors.

Meet Matt Murphy, Television Legal Analyst 
Matt Murphy worked as a Deputy District Attorney in Orange County, California, from 1993-2019, where he was known and loved by the Official Court Reporters that worked with him. Since 2019, Mr. Murphy has been in private practice, representing clients in the areas of sexual assault and abuse, personal injury, and select criminal defense. Mr. Murphy has served as a legal analyst for ABC News since 2019. Come hear about Matt Murphy’s exciting career prosecuting high-profile cases, his love and appreciation for the court reporters he worked with, his guest appearances on Dateline NBC, his new position as Legal Analyst for ABC News, and his current law practice where he’s an advocate for sexual assault and abuse victims.
